CarShare Vermont

Legitify works with a lot of mission driven organizations, but CarShare Vermont takes the "mission driven" phrase to a unique, literal level.

Legitify worked closely with CarShare Vermont Executive Director Annie Bourdon to produce a site that will help the organization launch the new car share service in Vermont. Annie felt Legitify Studio was the perfect platform to manage all content on the CarShare Vermont website.

Place Creative Company provided branding and logo development. They participated in our interface design process as Legitify created an interface that met the organization's goals and was an extension of the CarShare Vermont brand.

Put simply, car charing is when a group of people have access to a pool of cars that they share.

Here is what Annie has to say:

"When we began shopping around for a web design firm Legitify came highly recommended, and for very good reason. Mike, Margo, and Ben are not only incredibly savvy at what they do and a lot of fun to work with, but they're also personally invested in their projects. It really mattered to me and to CarShare Vermont that we selected a firm that would get behind our mission and help us share it in the most meaningful way possible. Legitify achieved that, and we couldn't be happier. I also can't overlook how easy the Studio platform is to use and how much I appreciate being able to manage our site with ease."

Year five was the year of Legitify Studio.

A new application was born, developed and deployed in the real world. Ben became a Legitify partner in March 2007 with the common vision to build the best hosted media management tool out there. We've done that and now are taking what we've learned and plan to roll out some amazing features later this spring. Keep an out for new features and plans.

Stereo Sound Agents: Legitify Throws Down Ollie Airwalk Style

Legitify is excited to announce the relaunch of the Stereo Sound Agency website. Stereo was founded in ’92 by renowned professional skateboarders and longtime friends Jason Lee and Chris Pastras.

You might think that I am far away from my late 80's Bill Danforth Alva deck, tracker trucks and T bones wheels taller than my shin but I am not. I have always been and always will be a self-proclaimed half hick/ half hippy with an inland wannabe skater, surfer, warm weather soul. So, yes, I had fun with this project.

Chris Patras was turned on to Legitify through Seth Neary while visiting Vermont for his solo art show at Seth and Sky's Pursuit Gallery. Chris and I connected soon after on the phone. We talked about Legitify, what Stereo needed and I showed him what Legitify Studio is all about. He got it quick... and our short initial call turned into over an hour "let's do this" phone call.

Along the way I worked closely with Travis Jensen, Stereo Sound Agency Minister of Information and San Francisco area Freelance Writer to make it happen. I look forward to working with him on future projects.

We are grateful to have had the opportunity to provide the launch ramp for Stereo and look forward to making that ramp bigger and better. Ecommerce coming soon.

Humble Beginnings Amidst Offshore Everything

I like offshore winds when I paddle out and catch some clean waves. Even though I have been surfing for over five years, I am certainly still a beginner. Even though I have been learning about, working for and living an environmentally and socially responsible life, I am still a beginner. I am humble and happy about that. I only want to get better, but know where I am.

The Global economy is what it is and it makes sense that our global society is where it is. I am glad "Green" has become popular and is starting to become common sense. The key to a sustainable future is regional independence with smart Global, potentially unnecessary relationships. I see these Global economic relationships as "nice", but not essential. What is nice vs. essential is a fun, personal question. While "nice" things for pleasure is ok, things essential to life and a sustainable future are more important.

Recently, Legitify competed against outsourced "out of county website developers" for a project and we won. Our price was competitive and there was a deeper connection to the Legitify blend of culture and commerce that are the foundation for our services and publishing tools. That made us feel good, really good. Have you ever used a bank site and wondered who actually did the design or programming? Why are some of these bank sites grounded in bad design and offer and even worse user experience? Translate that into anything. What is the economical, social and/ or environmental impact of everything you experience, eat or buy?

Meathead Films: Transitions to a new era of Internet Publishing

When I created a website last summer for the guys at Meathead Films, we took a farily traditional web site approach. There would be news updates, photos, and of course an online store. While we had given life to some slick features including an interactive tour map, their media management system (a custom application I wrote called Publishr) was still in it's infancy. The system lacked the ability to manage media and assets independently of the website. Publishr was hardly the scalable powerhouse that it's predecessor- Legitify Studio has become.

After a strong push to move the entire site including videos, 1000 photos, 70 blog entry updates into Studio, the Meatheads are now reaping all the benefits of Studio including Flash Video encoding on the fly, quality and performance tuning- and the ablity to publish their videos seamlessly in an iTunes podcast. Along with a few other aesthetic alterations to the website, there is a new theater template sporting a high quality (HD 1080i encoded into .flv)

The new store hooked in to Studio will be launching soon. I got sidetracked by creating the intro animation to the new film - Wanderland.

Studio Is A Socially Responsible Web Application

In an era of eco products and conscious consumption, we are glad too offer a web product that is affordable, easy to use, innovative and will be a useful tool for a long time. I try to live and work a "green" and "socially conscious" digital lifestyle, and as we develop and deploy Studio... this is becoming clearer each day.

Studio Is Affordable
Who wants to pay too much money for a website that may only last a short time? I have produced many websites powered by custom developed applications and the price is not low. I don't regret that, I am not talking down to those who do that, and anything I have produced in the past has been an appropriate solution based on client needs, available technology and existing resources. I happily am choosing to not produce super expensive websites if possible. Now we can offer a complete website with plenty of features and functionality powered by Legitify Studio for as low as $2500.

Studio Is Easy To Use
Easy to use is what we preach and it is what we hear. Some Studio users who are self proclaimed web or computer illiterate are letting out a sigh of relief. For years, Studio Users have had words, photos or video that never made it to their website. Once they start using Studio, they quickly understand why I say Studio Inspires Creation.

Studio Is Innovative
Studio is the best of MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, PieCasso, WordPress, Ofoto, etc except all your media is hosted and managed in one central place. Not only that, Studio powers your own personal or business website so you can easily organize, manage and distribute all your digital content.

Studio Will Be A Useful Tool For A Long Time
Studio is a hosted application. All websites in Studio are powered by one central code base. When we make an improvement to the photo gallery everyone gets that update for free. We develop and improve Studio everyday. New features, functionality design styles are free and new modules are either free options or available as add-ons for a reasonable price.

Why is Studio a Socially Responsible Website Application? In the spirit of sustainability, Studio improves economic, social and environmental health and awareness.

AdSense, nonsense?

A computer can’t sell a free lunch. Your website doesn’t sell your product, your content does. People produce content, the computer is a delivery tool. People are the only thing that ever sells a product, even if it’s through a creative message. There is a false value that is perceived in the online media today in which other people’s content can sell your product. Google calls this “AdSense”. Computer’s don’t have any “sense” about them. Good marketing and advertising is done through hard work. Only thoughtful research, solid branding, and smart content distribution techniques will drive your success.

Exibit A: While watching a podcast about cooking we decided to visit the producer's website.

Notice the first AdWords link "Enema Recipes".
Studio: A place for everything, and everything in its place

The best results happen only when you take the time to step back and reflect on what you've done in the context of its purpose. So, why am I building Studio?

After using and developing proprietary and open-source CMS tools as well using recently matured publishing tools such as Blogger, Flickr, and YouTube, I began to wonder: "Why am I managing my website, writing, photography, and cinematography in four different places?" While certainly there are social media marketing benefits associated with the popular communities (Not to mention the fact Google owns both Blogger and YouTube) I was convinced that bringing everything under one roof would not only be appealing to publishers and clients, but also helpful in organizing media on a timeline.

So I set out to build a consolidated, simplified, and highly usable tool with key features the big players have. Using my own PHP framework similar to Ruby On Rails (to be released soon), I was able to recreate these features within two months. Features included in the first lanch are:

Information Architecture & Page Attributes Management

Articles & Photo Content Management

Blog Management and Publishing Similar to Blogger and WordPress

Photo Management with Gallery and Gallery Grouping

Video Management and flash encoding on the fly

Look for these features to become available soon:

Podcast Management

Document Management

Contact & Lead/Notifications Management

Tagging for easy search in the future

Email, Mailbox, and Alias Management

Locations Management for Store/Dealer Locators and GeoTagging

I have also started in on some ideas for a common front end interface to a media life stream uploaded via publisher. Currently it only pulls from the photo tools, however you can see where this is going here.

For more information about Studio or to schedule a private demo contact us.

Randy Gaetano Just Back, Always Here

Ben and I recently got back from a trip to Maine. On our way back to Vermont we visited the new Grain Surfboards Shop and an old friend and talented artist Randy Gaetano. Randy has recently returned to the country after building his dream home in Costa Rica over the last two years. He is now busy building wooden surfboards with Grain, immersed in the next step of his art path and reconnecting to the Northeast.

Among others, the Legitify brand is one strong part Randy Gaetano. I won't spell out the connection, intention, or higher meaning of Randy's art and Legitify. Randy's art is a daily inspiration to both Legitify and our clients.

Randy's Futuristic Heirogrlyphics Series (t.v. man) has been a part of the Legitify Brand System since 2005.
Eye Witness: Climate Change In Vermont

Media Coverage of Vermont Climate Witness

Legitify is excited to be working with Tamarack Productions on Vermont Climate Witness. Vermont Climate Witness will be a map-based interactive experience that features user-generated content and live data around the theme of climate change in Vermont. Vermont Climate Witness was conceived of by Tamarack Productions who is partnering with Vermont Natural Resources Council and Legitify on the project.

The website is expected to launch this fall and will utilize Legitify Studio as the multimedia management platform along with custom maps and applications produced by Legitify.

On April 6, 2007, Pete from Tamarack did an interview for news Channel 5 WPTZ as they caught wind of the project so they swung by the Legitify Studio for some shots. The early coverage of this project planted seeds for interest, particpation and success!

The project is partially grant funded. Yes, we are planning for a rapid development cycle.... but hey, this thing has been in Ben's head for 5 years, builds upon the earlier Legitify CMS and is the perfect tool for Legitify clients. Now called Legitify Studio, it will have elements of a traditional website CMS but be more focused on media. Imagine that...

Here are some key features:

Manage websites and website content.

Create website pages, edit pages, drag and drop pages to change the order in the navigation and control the site structure.

Manage photo galleries and integrate photos into web pages or blogs.

Blogging tools and website integration. He knew of Legitify and what we've been up to the last few years and was eager to join forces to co-develop the new professional services and online publishing tools.
The First Blog Post... Four Years Later

A Quick Look Back, and Another Step Forward
January 2007 marked the beginning of Legitify 3.0. I created Legitify in December 2002 to provide an innovative blend of website creation, production and management services. I knew from the beginning I did not want to build a traditional web shop and wanted to focus on digital content and marketing. I was always and continue to be more excited about identifying new opportunities and delivering an innovative mix of tools and services. As the internet and digital media evolve, so will Legitify!

Over the last few years, Legitify has provided a range of Internet services and developed original digital content for companies of all shapes and sizes. We specialized in building websites and producing digital content. Legitify wrote brand and product copy for brands such as Burton, Helly Hansen and W.L. Gore Windstopper focused on the core messages a brand needs to communicate in order for their customers to believe with former partner and Marketing Director Vince LaVecchia. Legitify produced quality websites with clean interface designs and innovative technology with former partner and Creative director Justin Lewis. Legitify offered internet and brand marketing solutions with the efficiency of a small, adaptable company and the high operating standards of a larger firm. Vince LaVecchia and Justin Lewis are now operating Instrument Marketing, an interactive design, development and marketing firm in in Portland, Oregon.

As Vince and Justin began to (re)develop Instrument in Oregon, Legitify began to work closely with EpikOne, an online consultancy focused on website analytics and optimization. I served as the User Experience Director for EpikOne and with the EpikOne team Legitify continued to optimize websites and marketing efforts with a focus on analytics and usability. After developing a tight partnership with EpikOne, I am excited to be back on the Burlington waterfront one block up the bike path from the old Legitify office. Legitify continues to work with the EpikOne team and we are excited about the opportunity to focus on digital media for websites.

Our new location is studio 110 in the Wing Building located on the Burlington, Vermont waterfront and is part of Main Street Landing. It is great to be back on the waterfront and part of a "green" development. While internet video and digital content continues to evolve with internet technologies, the Legitify plan is to offer professional digital content production services and develop useful content creation, management and publshing tools.

For the Record

While the last version of the Legitify site certainly could have been considered more of blog than a corporate website, this is the first official Legitify "blog" post. My opinion of blogs and their uses will come out over time. I wouldn't be suprised if this is not called a blog, or if I choose to not call this a blog soon enough.
